REAR DOOR CONTACTS WHEEL (REPOSITION MOLDING)

MODELS AFFECTED: 1989 SEDAN DE VILLES

Some 1989 Sedan DeVilles may experience a condition of the rear door lower corner contacting the quarter wheel opening molding when opening the door. Refer to Figure 1. This condition may be caused by the expansion of the rear wheel opening molding in warm temperatures and high humidity. To repair this condition use the following procedure:

1. Make sure door edge guards are properly installed.

2. Remove rear wheel.

3. Loosen the rear section of the rocker panel molding by removing the screw at the bottom of the rear wheel opening. Refer to Figure 2.

4. Remove the two screws retaining the rocker molding in the door opening, and release the molding by sliding it downward off of the clip on the wheel opening molding. Refer to Figure 3.

5. Remove the screw and clip at the leading edge of the wheel opening molding.

6. Remove the front and center llmm wheel opening retainer nuts.

7. Hold the molding out from the quarter panel and elongate the front hole downward 1/8 inch. Refer to Figure 4.

8. Touch up bare metal with a zinc-rich primer.

9. Install the molding and finger tighten the two 11mm nuts.

10. Push down on the leading edge of the molding to achieve a flush fit of the molding to the dog leg, refer to Figure 5, and drill a new hole for the rocker molding clip.

11. Touch up holes with zinc-rich primer.

12. Install the rocker molding clip and tighten the two 11mm nuts (specified torque is 6 - 9 N-m).

13. Reinstall the rocker panel molding.

14. Reinstall wheel.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
