WHEEL OPENING MOLDING STUD RUBS ON TIRE UNDER LOAD

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1989 C - DEVILLES

Some 1989 DeVilles may expereince a condition of the rear wheel opening molding centre stud contacting the tire under certain loads and driving conditions, resulting in a mark on the tire. This condition may be caused by the nut being overtorqued. If the nut is overtorqued, the clip portion of the centre stud may deform and allow the stud to protrude past the surface of the nut. To repair this condition, use the following procedure:

1. Measure the length of centre stud protruding beyond the surface of the nut. Refer to Figure 1.

2. If the certre stud protrudes more than 8.6mm remove the rear wheel opening moulding.

3. Inspect the moulding surface near the centre retaining clip for any distortion or indentations. Refer to Figure 2.

4. Replace the moulding if necessary.

5. Replace the centre retaining clip with the new clip, P/N 12397719. The new clip has a shorter stud and a plastic sleeve. Refer to Figure 3.

6. Reinstall the moulding (specifeed torque is 6-9 N.m.).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
