INTERMITTENT TELLTALES ON DIGITAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS

SUBJECT: INTERMITTENT TELLTALE OPERATION ON DIGITAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS

MODELS AFFECTED: 1990 DE VILLES AND FLEETWOODS (VIN 236439-261947) EQUIPPED WITH DIGITAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS

Some 1990 DeVilles and Fleetwoods (VIN 2366439-261947) equipped with Digital Instrument Clusters may experience a condition of intermittent operation of telltales (especially "Inflatable Restraint" and "Charge"). These vehicles may also exhibit reverse turn signal indication (left turn indicator illuminated while signaling right turn or vice versa) while the headlights are on.

This condition may be caused by intermittent contact with the wiring harness at the instrument cluster flex circuit.

To repair this condition use the following procedure:

1. Remove Instrument Panel Cluster per procedure in Service Information Manual, Section 8C.

2. Note color of flex circuit.

- If flex circuit is green; proceed to step 4.

- If flex circuit is blue; note shape of contacts. Refer to Figures 1 and 2.

3. If contacts are square (Figure 1) proceed to step 4.

- If contacts are round (Figure 2) replace flex circuit with P/N 25087005. Note placement of telltale bulbs to allow to allow reinstallation in original locations.

4. Verify good harness connector insertion/contact at flex circuit connection.

5. Reinstall Instrument Panel Cluster.

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

For warranty purposes use Labor Operation N5140 at .5 hour for flex circuit replacement.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
