Some 1990 DeVilles and Fleetwoods built prior to breakpoint 276349 may experience a hesitation, miss, or chuggle when accelerating or turning with less than five gallons of fuel in the tank. This condition is caused by the fuel pick-up sock on the fuel pump not laying flat in the fuel tank. During installation of the sending unit the fuel sock may contact the side of the fuel tank baffle and deflect up causing loss of fuel pump prime.
To repair this condition use the following procedure:
1. Remove sending unit. Refer to Section 6C of the appropriate 1990 Service Information Manual for proper removal procedure.
2. Loosen fuel pump clamp enough to allow rotation of the fuel pump.
3. Rotate fuel pump assembly counterclockwise (viewed from top of sender) toward the float arm. Position edge of fuel sock 3mm from edge of float. Refer to Figure 1. Verify sock does not interfere with float operation.
4. Secure fuel pump clamp to sender.
5. Straighten fuel sock to lay flat in tank.
6. Reinstall sending unit assembly.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
