CAMPAIGN:ENGINE OIL LINE CONTACTS A/C COMPRESSOR

This Dealer Product Campaign Bulletin was previously released via DCS under Cadillac Campaign Identification Number 94-C-6. Note that new Corporate Campaign Identification Number is 94-C-53.

SUBJECT: ENGINE OIL COOLER LINE CONTACTS A/C COMPRESSOR

MODEL: CERTAIN 1993-94 ELDORADOS, SEVILLES AND 1993 ALLANTES EQUIPPED WITH THE 4.6L (295-HP) ENGINE (VIN CODE 9)

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, as amended, provides that each vehicle which is subject to a recall campaign of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has tendered it for repair. A failure to repair within sixty (60) days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time.

If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the owner may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.

To avoid having to provide these burdensome solutions, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each owner and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. As you will see in reading the attached copy of the owner letter, if the condition is not remedied within a reasonable time, owners are instructed on how to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

CONDITION

General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1993-94 Eldorado Touring Coupe (ETC), Seville Touring Sedan (STS) and 1993 Allante model vehicles equipped with the 4.6L (295-hp) engine (VIN Code 9). If the A/C compressor clutch assembly contacts the auxiliary engine oil cooler outlet hose, the hose may wear through allowing engine oil to leak into the engine compartment. If this condition occurs and an ignition source is present, an engine compartment fire could result.

DEALER ACTION

To prevent this condition, dealers are to install a tie strap to retain the auxiliary engine oil cooler outlet hose to the auxiliary engine oil cooler inlet hose at the bottom of the radiator. This will assure adequate clearance of the affected hose from the A/C compressor clutch assembly.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

All 1993 model Eldorado Touring Coupes (ETC), Seville Touring Sedans (STS) and Allantes equipped with the 4.6L (295-hp) engine (VIN Code 9) require this campaign.

All 1994 model Eldorado Touring Coupes (ETC) and Seville Touring Sedans (STS) equipped with the 4.6L (295-hp) engine (VIN Code 9) built within the following VIN ranges require this campaign:

1994 Eldorado From RU600001 Through and Including RU624742

1994 Seville From RU800001 Through and Including RU846345

All vehicles indicated on your Dealer List require this campaign; other suspect vehicles should be checked for campaign involvement prior to sale or service utilizing the Vehicle Information Service System (VISS).

DEALER LIST

A list of vehicles involved is enclosed for your follow-up. This list includes those vehicles originally sold by you, providing the current owner is still located in your area; and, those vehicles not originally sold by you whose current owners are now located in your area. Dealers are to contact the owners of the vehicles indicated on their list and arrange for the campaign correction to be performed as soon as possible. If no list is enclosed, none of the involved vehicles are known to be in your area at this time.

This list may contain owner names and addresses obtained from state motor vehicle registration records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

All unsold new vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this campaign must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this campaign bulletin before owners take possession of these vehicles.

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin. This could be done by mailing to such owners a copy of the owner letter accompanying this bulletin. Campaign follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the owner may not as yet have received the notification letter.

In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, please take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners of vehicles affected by this campaign will be notified by letter from Cadillac Motor Car Division. A copy of the owner letter is included with this bulletin.

COURTESY TRANSPORTATION

The availability of courtesy transportation to owners of vehicles involved in this campaign is of the utmost importance in maintaining customer satisfaction. Dealers are to take the steps necessary to ensure that these owners clearly understand that courtesy transportation is available and will be provided upon request at no charge to the owner.

Dear Cadillac Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

To prevent this condition, your Cadillac dealer will install a tie strap to retain the auxiliary engine oil cooler outlet hose to the auxiliary engine oil cooler inlet hose at the bottom of the radiator. This will assure adequate clearance of the affected hose from the A/C compressor clutch assembly. Of course, this service will be performed at no cost to you.

The mailing of this letter has been coordinated to ensure that instructions for making this repair have been received by your dealer and that needed parts are available for your car. Please contact your Cadillac dealer as soon as possible to arrange a service appointment and courtesy transportation, if desired. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much time is needed to perform this repair and process your vehicle.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
