Important: The battery must be in a charged state in order to avoid misdiagnosis. For battery charging or testing, refer to Battery. In order to avoid misdiagnosis, inspect for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Refer to Engine Controls.

Engine Does Not Crank, Starter Solenoid Does not Click

  1. Place the gear selector in Park.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the Run position.
  3. Observe the security indicator. The security indicator should light for 5 seconds then go out. The message STARTING DISABLED DUE TO THEFT SYSTEM, REMOVE IGNITION KEY should not appear on the driver information center.

Does the indicator stay on or flash continuously and is the STARTING DISABLED... message displayed?

  1. Load the test battery. Refer to Battery.
  2. Inspect the battery cables and the connections to the battery cables.

Are the battery and cables OK?

  1. Remove the INJ fuses from the engine compartment fuse block in order to keep the engine from starting.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the Run position.
  3. Measure the voltage from the starter solenoid terminal S (PPL wire) to ground.

Is the voltage 9.5 volts or greater?

  1. Replace the battery if the battery fails the load test.
  2. Repair the cable connections and replace the cables as needed.

Are the repairs and replacements complete?

System OK

  1. Disconnect the C131 (PPL Wire).
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the Run position.
  3. Measure the voltage from the female side of the C131 to ground.

Is the voltage 9.5 volts or greater?

--

Go to Step 8

  1. Inspect for poor connections at the starter solenoid terminal S.
  2. Inspect for a dirty or poor ground between the starter and the engine block.
  3. Repair or replace the starter. Refer to SD Starter Motor.

Is the repair or replacment complete?

  1. Reconnect C131.
  2. Disconnect the starter enable relay.
  3. Attach a test lamp between the starter enable relay term D and B+.
  4. While observing the test lamp, turn the ignition switch to the Run position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Inspect C131 terminal contact and circuit 6 from C131 to the starter solenoid for an open.
  2. If OK, replace the starter solenoid.

Is the replacement complete?

System OK

Inspect the terminal connections at C101.

Are the connections OK?

  1. Connect a test light between the starter enable relay, term F and ground.
  2. While observing the test lamp, turn the ignition switch to the Run position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a test lamp between the starter enable relay term B and ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Remove the crank fuse from the engine compartment fuse block.
  2. Connect a test light between the crank fuse terminal A4 and ground.
  3. While observing the test lamp, turn the ignition to switch to the Run position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a 30 amp fused jumper between the starter enable relay harness connector terminal B and terminal E
  2. Try to crank the engine.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Inspect circuit 142, including Batt1 Maxi® Fuse, for an open.
  2. Inspect the starter enable relay harness connector for a poor connection.
  3. If OK, replace the starter enable relay.

Is the replacement complete?

  1. Inspect circuit 1737 for an open.
  2. Inspect the Park/Neutral position switch.
  3. Inspect circuit 5 from the park/neutral position switch to s106 for an open.

Does the system still exitst?

Inspect circuit 5 for an open or power feed circuit 342 for an open including the ignition switch and Batt2 Maxi® Fuse.

Does the system still exist?

  1. Inspect for a poor connection to the starter enable relay.
  2. If OK, replace the starter enable relay.

Is the replacement complete?
