Is the exhaust pipe "kinked?"

Repair or replace the tailpipe, as needed.

Is the exhaust system restricted with excessive back pressure?

Inspect the muffler.

Is there a restriction in the muffler?

Go to Step 4

  1. Remove the muffler.
  2. Visually inspect the muffler.
  3. If a muffler restriction exists, replace the muffler.

Is the exhaust system restricted with excessive back pressure?

Go to Step 5

System OK

Inspect the end of the tailpipe.

Is there an obstruction in the tailpipe, or is the tailpipe crimped?

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 7

  1. Remove the obstruction in the tailpipe, or striaighten the crimped tailpipe outlet.
  2. If the tailpipe is damaged, replace the muffler/tailpipe assembly.

Is the exhaust system restricted with excessive back pressure?

Go to Step 7

System OK

Inspect the three way + oxidation catalytic converter.

Is the three way + oxidation catalytic converter plugged?

Go to Step 8

Refer to Engine Controls (Section 6E), in order to diagnose the cause of the restriction.

Is the exhaust system restricted with excessive back pressure?
