Tools Required

Removal Procedure
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the wheel bearing and hub. Refer to
Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement
.
- Remove the lower ball joint cotter pin
(1) and retaining nut (2).
- Remove the outer tie rod retaining nut.
- Using J 24319-B
separate
the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
- Using J 43828
separate the
ball joint from the steering knuckle.
- Remove the strut to steering knuckle attaching
nuts and bolts.
- Remove the steering knuckle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint and strut.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the steering knuckle to strut retaining bolts and nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the steering knuckle to strut retaining nuts to 147 N·m
(108 lb ft).
- Install the lower ball joint retaining
nut (2).
Tighten
• | Tighten the lower ball joint retaining nut to 10G N·m (88 lb in)
plus an additional 150 degrees. |
• | For cotter pin alignment, tighten the nut up to, but do not exceed
60 degrees additional rotation. Do not back off nut for cotter pin alignment. |
- Install a new cotter pin.
- Install the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.
- Install the outer tie rod retaining nut.
Tighten
Tighten the outer tie rod retaining nut to 30 N·m (22 lb ft)
plus an additional 200 degrees.
- Install the wheel bearing and hub assembly. Refer to
Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement
.
- Install the tire and wheel. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Check wheel alignment. Refer to
Wheel Alignment Specifications
in Wheel Alignment.
Steering Knuckle Replacement FE7
Tools Required

Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel . Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the lower ball joint cotter pin and nut.
- Remove the wheel drive shaft nut.
- Remove the brake caliper bolts. Refer to
Front Brake Caliper Replacement
in Disc Brakes.
- Support and hang the caliper away from the brake rotor.
- Remove the brake rotor. Refer to
Front Brake Rotor Replacement
in Disc Brakes.
- Disconnect the wheel speed sensor connector.
- Remove the hub and bearing retaining bolts.
- Use J 28733-B
in order
to remove the hub and drive axle.
- Use J 24319-B
in order to separate the tie rod (1) from the steering knuckle
(2).
- Using J 39549
separate
the ball joint from the lower control arm.
- Remove the strut to knuckle attaching nuts
and bolts.
- Remove the steering knuckle.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant

- Install the steering knuckle to the strut.
Tighten
Tighten the strut to knuckle bolts to 177 N·m (131 lb ft).
- Connect the lower ball joint.
Tighten
Tighten the ball joint stud nut to 30 N·m (22 lb ft),
then tighten an additional 190 degrees.
- Install a new cotter pin.
- Install the tie rod.
Tighten
• | Tighten the tie rod end to knuckle nut to 30 N·m (22 lb ft)
plus an additional 200 degrees. |
• | For cotter pin alignment, tighten the nut up to, but do not exceed
60 degrees additional rotation. Do not back off nut for cotter pin
alignment. |
- Install the hub and bearing to the steering
knuckle/drive axle.
- Install the hub and bearing retaining bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the hub and bearing bolts to 152 N·m (112 lb ft).
- Connect the wheel speed sensor connector
to the wheel speed sensor.
- Install the rotor. Refer to
Front Brake Rotor Replacement
in Disc Brakes.
- Install the caliper. Refer to
Front Brake Caliper Replacement
in Disc Brakes.
- Install the drive axle nut.
Tighten
Tighten the drive axle nut to 215 N·m (159 lb ft).
- Install the wheel and tire.
Tighten
Tighten the wheel and tire to 125 N·m (80 lb ft).
- Check wheel alignment. Refer to
Wheel Alignment Measurement
in Wheel Alignment.
