Subject: | Information Regarding On-Board Navigational Systems |
Models: | 2000-2002 Cadillac DeVille, Seville |
Introduction
During the course of the last few years, great strides have been achieved
relative to the usage of innovative technology within the automotive industry.
An example of this technology is the availability of navigational systems
to assist customers in their ownership experience. The intent of this bulletin
is to provide information on the above mentioned Cadillac models relative
to navigation system capabilities, characteristics and service/customer support.
General Information
2000-2001 Model Years (USA only)
Beginning with the 2000 MY, the Cadillac DeVille and Seville models
sold in the USA were offered with an optional On-Board Navigation System (RPO UY4).
The same system (with updated map coverage) was also available for the 2001
MY. The main components of this system are as follows:
• | Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna -- under rear package
shelf |
• | Navigation Electronic Control Unit (ECU) -- mounted in trunk |
• | Navigation Radio Controller (NRC) -- mounted in trunk |
• | Navigation Display -- center console |
This system requires the usage of nine compact discs (CDs). These CDs
are labeled for specific regions of the contiguous 48 states of the
domestic North American market. Please note that for 2000-2001 model
year vehicles, all nine CDs were shipped in a leather binder to the ordering
dealership when the vehicle's invoice was generated. As such, the leather
packet would arrive at the dealership prior to the actual vehicle (usually,
within a 10 day to two week time frame). As part of this shipping process,
dealerships were required to place the leather binder in a safe environment
until the vehicle was prepped and delivered to the customer.
Customers who wish to obtain replacement CDs, in the event any of the
original items become lost or damaged, may do so through your parts department.
Below is the list of part numbers you may use to place an order through GMSPO.

USA and Canada, are offered with an optional Advance Navigation System (RPO U3R).
System features include the following:
• | The AVN system has combined the three modules used on the 2000-2001
models into a single unit - the Navigation ECU. |
• | A single DVD-based map coverage for the continental United States
and Canada. Multiple usage of CD-based map coverage has been eliminated. |
• | 6.5 in (165 mm) touch screen |
• | Voice or text guidance (English, French, German, Spanish, or Italian) |
• | DVD video capability (operated only when the vehicle is in the
PARK position) |

Please note that for the 2002 model year vehicles, the navigational
DVD is placed within the vehicle during assembly and is shipped with the vehicle.
Customers who wish to obtain a replacement DVD, in the event the original
item becomes lost or damaged, may do so through your parts department. When
ordering, please specify P/N 25737698.
Mapping Information
The mapping information contained on the discs covers all interstate
freeways/Trans--Canada highways and most of the state/provincial highways,
country roads, major and general streets. The reality being that the network
of roads are always in a constant state of change, the level of mapping detail
can vary from region to region, state to state or province to province and
even from disc to disc and year to year. As such, it should be expected by
all users that the level of updated mapping information will increase over
time. Mapping information has been separated into two distinct categories.
These categories are known as DETAILED and NON-DETAILED coverage areas. The
definition of each category is described below:
Detailed Area
This category contains the highest level of map detail available (literally
"door to door") while a customer is driving from their original
location to their destination site. A detailed area will include all of the
highways, service and residential roads in the map database. Road attributes
including street names, address directionality (for example, one way streets),
turn restrictions, etc., are contained in this category. Also included in
this category is a list of Points of Interest (POI) such as restaurants, airports,
banks, city centers, hospitals, parking garages, police stations, gas stations,
schools, historical monuments, tourist attractions, etc.
Non-Detailed Area
This is a basic category containing most of the major road network only.
The category does not provide "door to door" guidance. Residential
roads, service roads, Points of Interest (except city centers) and street
addresses are not included in this category. This category is equal to the
amount of road information that can generally be observed in AAA state or
provincial maps.
To assist Cadillac customers in determining the level of mapping coverage
they will be able to obtain while traveling, the Navigation System Map Disc
Coverage booklet lists (by county/city), those areas categorized as Detailed
areas. Those counties/cities not listed are categorized as Non-Detailed areas.
As previously mentioned, since the network of roads is constantly changing,
it is strongly recommended that customers access Cadillac's website (www.cadillac.com).
The website will provide the most information regarding mapping availability
specific to the USA market.
Should a customer wish to upgrade their CDs/DVD to a more recent version,
they may do so at their expense. It should not be submitted as a warranty
claim. This is the same philosophy that is encountered with software for personal
computers in the home.
System Characteristics
• | The 2002 AVN system utilizes voice recognition capabilities in
English language. This allows the user to provide voice commands to the system
that previously required the use of either a hard or soft key input. |
• | With voice recognition, regional accent characteristics may have
an impact on the system's performance. |
• | For AVN, the single DVD is loaded by tilting the screen forward.
This allows the loading to take place inside the vehicle vs. opening the trunk
to load the respective CD as was done in the previous NAV system. |
• | Since the system has a DVD reader, users can also watch DVD movies
in the vehicle. The gear selector must be in the PARK position in order to
view DVD movies. |
• | The GPS indicator for the AVN system is opposite of the prior
NAV system. For NAV, if the system was receiving an adequate GPS signal, the
GPS logo would appear on the screen. The AVN system only displays a GPS logo
if the signal IS NOT RECEIVED. |
• | Since the radio is incorporated into a single navigation unit,
the Theftlock® feature used for the radios is also used for AVN. |
• | The AVN screen has 2D and 3D capability. The NAV system only had
2D capability. |
