The powertrain control module (PCM) controls the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid valve pulse width modulation (PWM). The solenoid controls the hydraulic fluid for TCC apply and release. When the vehicle is accelerating, the PCM commands the TCC to be disengaged.
If the PCM detects a low TCC slip from -20 to +150 RPM, when the TCC is commanded OFF, then DTC P0742 sets. DTC P0742 is a type B DTC.
This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC:
DTC P0742 Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) System - Stuck On
• | No MAF DTCs P0101, P0102 or P0103. |
• | No MAP DTCs P0106, P0107 or P0108. |
• | No TP DTCs P0121, P0122 or P0123. |
• | No VSS DTCs P0502 or P0503. |
• | No AT ISS DTCs P0716 or P0717. |
• | No SSE DTCs P0973, P0974, P0976 or P0977. |
• | No SSP DTCs P0751, P0752, P0756, or P0757. |
• | No TCC PWM solenoid valve DTC P2763 or P2764. |
• | The engine run time is greater than 5 seconds. |
• | The IMS indicates D4. |
• | The transmission gear ratio indicates 3rd or 4th gear. |
• | The transmission fluid temperature is 20-133°C (68-271°F). |
• | The TP angle is 20-90 percent. |
• | The engine torque is 155-294 N·m (114-217 lb ft). |
• | The vehicle speed is 16-130 km/h (10-81 mph). |
• | The TCC is commanded OFF. |
The TCC slip speed is -20 to +150 RPM for 4.5 seconds, twice during the same trip.
• | The PCM illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) during the second consecutive trip in which the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met. |
• | The PCM forces TCC application. |
• | The PCM freezes transmission adaptive functions. |
• | The PCM records the operating conditions when the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met. The PCM stores this information as Freeze Frame and Failure Records. |
• | The PCM stores DTC P0742 in PCM history during the second consecutive trip in which the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met. |
• | The PCM turns OFF the MIL during the third consecutive trip in which the diagnostic test runs and passes. |
• | A scan tool can clear the MIL/DTC. |
• | The PCM clears the DTC from PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without an emission-related diagnostic fault occurring. |
• | The PCM cancels the DTC default actions when the ignition switch is OFF long enough in order to power down the PCM. |
• | Rapid fluctuation in line pressure may set DTC P0742. Refer to Line Pressure Check . |
• | The customer may notice an engine stalling condition. |
• | Potentially DTC P0742 can false fail and may have been set due to another DTC. |
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
This step verified that the PCM commanded the TCC PWM solenoid valve OFF and the slip speed is -20 to +150 RPM.
This step inspects and repairs the components that caused the DTC to set.

Important: Before clearing the DTC, use the scan tool in order to record the Freeze Frame and Failure Records. Using the Clear Info function erases the Freeze Frame and Failure Records from the PCM. While the TCC duty cycle is 0%, does the scan tool display a TCC slip speed within the specified parameters? | -20 to +150 RPM | Go to Step 3 | Go to Diagnostic Aids

4 | Perform the following procedure in order to verify the repair:
Has the test run and passed? | -- | Go to Step 5 | Go to Step 2
5 | With the scan tool, observe the stored information, capture info. and DTC info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? | -- | Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle in Vehicle DTC Information | System OK |
