Steering Column Jacket Replacement Manual Column Shift

Tools Required

J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

1. Disable the SIR coil. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
2. Remove the steering wheel from the column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
4. Remove the steering wheel theft deterrent lock assembly. Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Replacement .
5. Remove the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Steering Column Wiring Harness Assembly Replacement .
6. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
7. Remove the linear shift assembly, the A/T shift lock control assembly, and the shift lever only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .
8. Remove the tilt spring only. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .



9. If a steering shaft position sensor is present, remove the following parts from the steering column support assembly:

9.1.	The boot seal (1).

9.2.	The steering shaft seal (2).

9.3.	The sensor retainer  (3).

9.4.	The steering wheel position sensor (4). Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering .

9.5.	The retaining ring (5).




10. Remove the following parts from the steering column support assembly:

10.1.

The boot seal (1)

10.2.

The steering shaft seal (2)

10.3.

The sensor retainer (3)

10.4.

The retaining ring (4)

10.5.

The seal (5)




11. Remove the 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .



12. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.

1. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column support assembly (2).




Important: Once the steering column support and the pivot pins have been staked 3 times, replace the steering column support.

2. Lubricate the pivot pins with GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723).

Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.

Stake the pivot pins in 3 places.




3. If a steering shaft position sensor is present, install the following parts to the steering column support assembly:

3.1.	The retaining ring (5).

3.2.	The steering wheel position sensor  (4). Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering .

3.3.	The sensor retainer (3).

3.4.	The steering shaft seal (2).

3.5.	The boot seal (1).




4. If a steering shaft position sensor is not used, install the following parts to the steering column support assembly:

4.1.	The seal (5).

4.2.	The retaining ring (4).

4.3.	The sensor retainer (3).

4.4.	The steering shaft seal (2).

4.5.	The boot seal (1).

Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

5. Install the linear shift assembly, the A/T shift lock control assembly, and switch lever only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .
6. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
7. Install the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Steering Column Wiring Harness Assembly Replacement .
8. Install the tilt spring only. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
9. Install the steering wheel theft deterrent lock assembly. Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Replacement .
10. Install the steering column into the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
11. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
12. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.

Steering Column Jacket Replacement Manual Floor Shift

Tools Required

J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

1. Disable the SIR coil. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
2. Remove the steering wheel from the column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
4. Inspect the steering column for accident damage. Refer to Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection .
5. Remove the steering wheel theft deterrent lock assembly. Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Replacement .
6. Remove the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Steering Column Wiring Harness Assembly Replacement .
7. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
8. Remove the tilt spring. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .



9. Remove the following parts from the steering column support assembly:

9.1.	The boot seal (1)

9.2.	The steering shaft seal (2)

9.3.	The sensor retainer (3)

9.4.	The steering wheel position sensor (4). Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering .

9.5.	The retaining ring (5)




10. Remove the 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .



11. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.

1. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column support assembly (2).




Important: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column support assembly has been staked 3 times.

2. Lubricate the pivot pins with GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723).

Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.

Stake the pins in 3 places.




3. Install the following parts onto the steering column support assembly:

3.1.	The retaining ring (5)

3.2.	The steering wheel position sensor  (4). Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering .

3.3.	The sensor retainer (3)

3.4.	The steering shaft seal (2)

3.5.	The boot seal (1)

4. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
5. Install the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Steering Column Wiring Harness Assembly Replacement .
6. Install the tilt spring only. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
7. Install the steering wheel theft deterrent lock assembly. Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Replacement .
8. Install the steering column into the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
9. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
10. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.

Steering Column Jacket Replacement Power Tilt\\ Telescope, Column Shift

Tools Required

J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.




1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
2. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
4. Remove the steering wheel theft deterrent lock assembly. Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Replacement .
5. Remove the linear shift assembly, shift lever and the A/T shift lock control only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .
6. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
7. Remove the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Steering Column Wiring Harness Assembly Replacement .
8. Remove the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Telescope Actuator Assembly Replacement .
9. Remove the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Tilt Motor Replacement .
10. Remove 1 TORX® head screw from the tilt and telescope module.
11. Slide the control module out from the steering column.



12. Remove the following components:

12.1.

The boot seal (5)

12.2.

The steering shaft seal (4)

12.3.

The sensor retainer (3)

12.4.

The sensor locator (2)

13. Remove the steering wheel position sensor (1). Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering .



14. Remove 1 TORX® head screw from the bottom of the gearshift and tilt motor bracket.
15. Remove the bracket.



16. Gently pry the lower shield assembly off of the steering column.



17. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .



18. Unscrew the lead screw.



19. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.




1. Install the steering column support and secure using 4 support screws.

Tighten
Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).




2. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).



3. Screw in the lead screw.



4. Lubricate the pivot pins with GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516).

Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.




5. Align and snap the lower shield assembly onto the steering column.



6. Install the bracket.
7. Install 1 TORX® head screw to the bottom of the gearshift and tilt motor bracket.

Tighten
Tighten the screw to 3 N·m (27 lb in).




8. Install the following components:

8.1.	The steering wheel position sensor  (1). Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering .

8.2.	The sensor locator (2)

8.3.	The sensor retainer (3)

8.4.	The steering shaft seal (4)

8.5.	The boot seal (5)




9. Slide the control module into position.
10. Install 1 retaining screw.

Tighten
Tighten the screw to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

11. Install the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Tilt Motor Replacement .
12. Install the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Telescope Actuator Assembly Replacement .
13. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
14. Install the linear shift assembly, shift lever and the A/T shift lock control only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .
15. Install the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Steering Column Wiring Harness Assembly Replacement .
16. Install the steering wheel theft deterrent lock assembly. Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Replacement .
17. Install the steering column into the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
18. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
19. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.

Steering Column Jacket Replacement Power Tilt\\ Telescope, Floor Shift

Tools Required

J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

1. Disable the SIR coil. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
2. Remove the steering wheel from the column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
3. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
4. Remove the steering wheel theft deterrent lock assembly. Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Replacement
5. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
6. Remove the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Steering Column Wiring Harness Assembly Replacement .
7. Remove the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Telescope Actuator Assembly Replacement .
8. Remove the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only. Refer to Tilt Motor Replacement .



9. Remove 1 TORX® head screw from the control module.
10. Slide the control module out from the steering column.



11. Remove the following components:

11.1.

The boot seal (5)

11.2.

The steering shaft seal (4)

11.3.

The sensor retainer (3)

11.4.

The sensor locator (2)

12. The steering wheel position sensor (1). Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering .



13. Remove 1 TORX® head screw from the bottom of the gearshift and tilt motor bracket.
14. Remove the bracket.



15. Gently pry the lower shield assembly off of the steering column.



16. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .



17. Unscrew the lead screw.



18. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.



19. Remove and discard 4 support screws from the steering column support.
20. Remove the steering column support.
21. Inspect the steering column for accident damage.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.




1. Install the steering column support and secure the support using 4 support screws.

Tighten
Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).




2. Install the tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the jacket assembly (2).



3. Install the lead screw.



4. Lubricate the pivot pins with GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516).

Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.




5. Align and snap the lower shield assembly onto the steering column.



6. Install the bracket.
7. Install 1 TORX® head screw to the bottom of the gearshift and tilt motor bracket.

Tighten
Tighten the screw to 3 N·m (26 lb in).




8. Install the following components:

8.1.	The steering wheel position sensor  (1). Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering .

8.2.	The sensor locator (2)

8.3.	The sensor retainer (3)

8.4.	The steering shaft seal (4)

8.5.	The boot seal (5)




9. Slide the control module into position.
10. Install 1 retaining screw.

Tighten
Tighten the screw to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

14. Install the wire harness assembly only. Refer to Steering Column Wiring Harness Assembly Replacement .
15. Install the steering wheel theft deterrent lock assembly. Refer to Theft Deterrent Module Replacement .
16. Install the steering column into the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
17. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
18. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
