GR.6E EGR INOPERATIVE CAN RESULT IN CODE 44 - 1981 DFI AN INOPERATIVE OR IMPAIRED EGR SYSTEM CAN RESULT IN A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WITH A CODE 44 (OXYGEN SENSOR LEAN) ON 1981 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE 6.0 LITER DFI ENGINE. VERY OFTEN, THIS CONDITION WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY A NOTICEABLE DETONATION (PINGING SOUND). CODE 44 IS SET ONLY AFTER THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN OPERATING AT 45-60 MPH AT STEADY STATE FOR 60 SECONDS WITH A WARM ENGINE. SHOULD SUCH A CONDITION BE ENCOUNTERED, PERFORM THE EGR SYSTEM FUNCTIONAL CHECKS DESCRIBED IN THE 1981 SERVICE INFORMATION MANUAL. OTHER CONDITIONS, SUCH AS BINDING MD SOLENOIDS AND FUEL SYSTEM OR AIR MANAGEMENT MALFUNCTIONS, MAY ALSO CAUSE A CODE 44. BE SURE TO CHECK THESE SYSTEMS PER THE APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSTIC CHARTS IN THE 1981 SERVICE INFORMATION MANUAL BEFORE REPLACING THE OXYGEN SENSOR, ECM, OR OTHER RELATED PARTS.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
