A NEW REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR THE AT 325 TRANSMISSION V-8 GAS AND DIESEL MODELS REPLACES THE PROCEDURE IN THE 1981 SERVICE MANUAL. (FIG. 11) 1.OPEN HOOD AND PLACE PROTECTIVE COVERS ON BOTH FENDERS. 2.DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE (BOTH ON DIESELS). 3.DISCONNECT THE SPEEDOMETER CABLE AT THE TRANSMISSION. 4.REMOVE THE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY AND INSTALL J-26996-1 COVER. 5.DISCONNECT THE T.V. CABLE FROM THE BELLCRANK (DIESEL) OR CARBURETOR THROTTLE LEVER (GASOLINE) 6.DISCONNECT THE T.V. CABLE FROM THE BRACKET BY DEPRESSING BOTH RETAINERS AND SLIDING THE CABLE OUT. 7.REMOVE THE ONE ENGINE TO TRANSMISSION BOLT THAT RETAINS THE T.V. CABLE AND LOOP THE T.V. CABLE OUT OF THE WAY. 8.INSTALL ENGINE HOLDING FIXTURE J-22825-01. SEE FIG. 7A-39. 9.REMOVE THE TOP AND TWO LEFT UPPER FINAL DRIVE TO TRANSMISSION BOLTS. 10.REMOVE THE REMAINING ACCESIBLE ENGINE TO TRANSMISSION BOLTS (4). 11.REMOVE THE TRANSMISSION DIPSTICK TUBE AND PLUG THE OPENING. 12.RAISE CAR. 13.REMOVE THE SPLASH BAFFLE AND DEFLECTOR. 14.REMOVE THE STARTER ASSEMBLY. 15.DISCONNECT THE TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES AND PLUG THE OPENINGS. 16.LOOSEN THE LEFT UPPER CONVERTER COVER BOLT AND REMOVE THE REMAINING ONES. 17.REMOVE THE BOLTS AND NUTS RETAINING THE LEFT EXHAUST PIPE TO THE "Y" PIPE AND SLIDE THE FLANGES APART FOR CLEARANCE. 18.POSITION A TRANSMISSION JACK. 19.REMOVE THE THREE REMAINING FINAL DRIVE TO TRANSMISSION BOLTS. 20.REMOVE THE TORQUE CONVERTER TO FLYWHEEL BOLTS. 21.DISCONNECT THE SHIFT LINKAGE AT THE TRANSMISSION. 22.REMOVE THE FINAL DRIVE SUPPORT BRACKET BOLT AND REMAINING ENGINE TO TRANSMISSION BOLT. 23.REMOVE THE RIGHT TRANSMISSION MOUNT (THROUGH BOLT AND 3 BRACKET BOLTS. 24.LOOSEN THE LEFT TRANSMISSION MOUNT THROUGH BOLT AND REMOVE THE THREE BRACKET TO TRANSMISSION CASE BOLTS (THIS WILL DISCONNECT THE LEFT TRANSMISSION MOUNT). 25.CAREFULLY LOWER THE TRANSMISSION WHILE DISENGAGING THE FINAL DRIVE. 26.INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER HOLDING TOOL J-21366 AND REMOVE THE TRANSMISSION FROM THE CAR. INSTALLATION ALWAYS REPLACE THE FINAL DRIVE TO TRANSMISSION GASKET. TO INSTALL TRANSMISSION, REVERSE REMOVAL PROCEDURE. TO ASSIST IN THE ENGAGEMENT OF THE FINAL DRIVE TO TRANSMISSION SPLINES, MAKE SURE THAT THE FINAL DRIVE TO TRANSMISSION MOUNTING FACES ARE IN ALIGNMENT WITH EACH OTHER. AFTER THE SPLINES ARE ENGAGED, LOOSELY INSTALL TWO FINAL DRIVE TO TRANSMISSION LOWER ATTACHING BOLTS. TIME CAN BE SAVED BY INSTALLING TWO ENGINE TO TRANSMISSION BOLTS FROM ABOVE FIRST TO AID ALIGNMENT. AFTER THE FINAL DRIVE AND TRANSMISSION ARE MATED ALIGN THE TRANSMISSION WITH THE ENGINE AND INSTALL THE REMAINING ATTACHING BOLTS. BEFORE INSTALLING THE FLEX PLATE TO CONVERTER BOLTS, MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE WELD NUTS ON THE CONVERTER ARE FLUSH WITH THE FLEX PLATE AND THE CONVERTER ROTATES FREELY BY HAND IN THIS POSITION. THEN HAND START ALL THREE BOLTS AND TIGHTEN FINGER TIGHT. THIS WILL INSURE PROPER CONVERTER ALIGNMENT. TORQUE ALL BOLTS TO SPECIFICATIONS. SEE SPECIFICATIONS. ADJUST SHIFT LINKAGE. ADJUST T.V./DETENT CABLE-SEE T.V./DETENT CABLE ADJUSTMENT. REFILL TRANSMISSION WITH FLUID. SEE CHECKING AND ADDING FLUID.
