THIS BULLETIN CONTAINS MULTIPLE SUBJECTS. PAGE THROUGH TO DESIRED SUBECT.
1. PROPER JUMP STARTING PROCEDURES ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS
WITH THE USE OF ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS (I.E., RADIO, ECM, ECC, DIGITAL CLUSTER, ETC.) BECOMING MORE WIDESPREAD EACH MODEL YEAR, THE POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGE CAUSED BY IMPROPER JUMP STARTS INCREASES. THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES ARE PRESENTED TO REDUCE THE LIKELIHOOD OF SUCH DAMAGE.
A. THE IGNITION SWITCH MUST BE IN THE "OFF" POSITION WHEN CONNECTING OR DISCONNECTING THE JUMPER CABLES.
B. CABLE POLARITY MUST BE CORRECT. (COMPONENT DAMAGE CAN OCCUR IF THE POLARITY IS REVERSED, EVEN IF ONLY VERY BRIEFLY.)
C. A 24 VOLT JUMP MUST NOT BE USED.
D. ALL ACCESSORIES, INCLUDING THE RADIO, SHOULD BE TURNED OFF BEFORE JUMP STARTING.
2. SPARK PLUG SPECIFICATION - 1980 THROUGH 1982 4.1L V-6 ENGINE
THE SPARK PLUGS AND GAP SPECIFIED FOR 1980 THROUGH 1982 CADILLACS EQUIP- PED WITH 4.1L V-6 ENGINES ARE LISTED BELOW:
YEAR TYPE GAP P/N
1982 R45TS8 .080 5613721 1981 R45TS8 .080 5613721 1980 R45TSX .060 5613575
3. ROUGH IDLE GLOW PLUG RESISTANCE TEST
HIGH GENERATOR OUTPUT MAY EFFECT THE CONSISTENCY OF GLOW PLUG READINGS FROM LEFT SIDE TO RIGHT SIDE WHEN THE RESISTANCE TEST IS BEING CONDUCTED (REFER TO DSTB 80-T-9 AND SERVICEMAN BULLETIN 81-37, GROUP 11). HIGH GENERATOR OUTPUT WILL OCCUR WITH A BATTERY IN A LOW STATE OF CHARGE OR WITH ACCESSORIES ON. TO PREVENT THE GENERATOR OUTPUT FROM, AFFECTING THE RESISTANCE TEST, DISCONNECT THE TWO WIRE CONNECTOR AT THE GENERATOR.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
