THM 325-4L TRANSMISSION UPDATE MULTIPLE SUBJECTS

THIS BULLETIN CONTAINS MULTIPLE SUBJECTS. PAGE THROUGH TO DESIRED SUBJECT.

I. ROUGH 3-4 SHIFT FEEL

THM 325-4L MODEL AJ TRANSMISSIONS USED ON 1982 E/K CARS EQUIPPED WITH HT4100 ENGINES, BUILT BEFORE TRANSMISSION SERIAL NUMBER 83 AJ 32356 MAY EXHIBIT A ROUGH 3-4 UPSHIFT. THIS ROUGH 3-4 SHIFT CONDITION MAY BE DUE TO A SOFT FOURTH CLUTCH APPLY. THE SOFT APPLY OF THE FOURTH CLUTCH CAN CAUSE AN INCOMPLE SHIFT ON THE ACCUMULATOR STROKE AND RESULT IN A ROUGH 3-4 SHIFT FEEL. THE 3-4 ACCUMULATOR ASSEMBLY ON THESE EARLY TRANSMISSION BY DESIGN DID NOT CONTAIN A SPRING (REFER TO FIGURE 1). BEGINNING AT SERIAL NUMBER 82 AJ32356, A SPRING WAS ADDED AND THE PISTON ORIENTATION WAS REVERSED AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 2.

THIS SPRING (P/N 8635277) IS AVAILABLE FORM GMWDD AND CAN BE INSTALLED TO CORRECT THE ROUGH 3-4 UPSHIFT CONDITION IN BEFORE NUMBER TRANSMISSIONS. TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, PROCEED AS FOLLOWS:

1. REMOVE THE ACCUMULATOR HOUSING FROM THE TRANSMISSION CASE USING ONLY STEP NUMBERS 2, 3, 4, 6, 11,12 AND 14 UNDER THE HEADING "EXTERNAL PARTS" BEGINNING ON PAGE 325-4L-5 OF THE 1982 SERVICE INFORMATION MANUAL.

2. REMOVE AND DISCARD "E" CLIP FROM END OF ACCUMULATOR PIN (REFER TO FIGURE 1).

3. REMOVE, INVERT AND REINSTALL ACCUMULATOR PISTON ONTO THE PIN SO THE SPRING POCKET SIDE IS NOW FACING AWAY FROM THE HOUSING (REFER TO FIGURE 2).

4. INSTALL A NEW SPRING OVER THE PISTON AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 2.

5. REASSEMBLE THE TRANSMISSION USING STEP NUMBERS 111, 11M, 14A THROUGH E, 16 AND 18 UNDER THE HEADING "VALVE BODY" ON PAGE 325-4L-59 AS WELL AS STEPS 1 THROUGH 3 UNDER THE HEADING "THE OIL PAN AND TORQUE CONVERTER" ON PAGE 325-4L-61.

II. ACCUMULATOR PISTON IDENTIFICATION

THE 1-2 AND 3-4 ACCUMULATOR PISTONS ARE INCORRECTLY IDENTIFIED IN FIGURE 325-4L-19, 20,228 AND 229 ON PAGES 325-4L-10 AND 325-4L-64 OF THE 1982 SERVICE MANUAL.

FIGURE 3,4 AND 5, SHOWN BELOW, CORRECTLY IDENTIFY THESE PISTONS BASED ON MODEL APPLICATION.

PLEASE CORRECT FIGURES 325-4L-19, 20, 228 AND 229 IN YOUR SERVICE MANUAL USING THESE FIGURES.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
