REAR MAIN SEAL INSTALLATION

5.7L DIESEL ENGINE UPDATE

1. CYLINDER HEAD REPLACEMENT- GM-GOODWRENCH 5.7L DIESEL ENGINE

Two new cylinder heads have been released for servicing the GM-Goodwrench 5.7L diesel engine. The new cylinder heads (P/N 22523637 and P/N 22523638), refer to DSIB 83-I-26, have different dowel pin locations than the cylinder heads previously released.

The previously released cylinder heads may be used on the 5.7L GM-Goodwrench diesel engine by installing the dowel pins in the correct dowel pin holes in the block to match the dowel pin holes in the cylinder heads. DO NOT install the cylinder heads without the dowel pins.

2. REAR MAIN SEAL INSTALLATION - 5.7L DIESEL ENGINE

The following is a revised rear main seal installation procedure for all Cadillacs equipped with a 5.7L diesel engine.

1. Clean the seal groove in the block and/or cap as necessary.

2. Apply a THIN, even coat (about two drops) of bonding adhesive (P/N 1052621) or equivalent over the entire seal surface of the groove.

3. Within one minute, install the seal using the procedure listed in the 1983 Cadillac Service Information Manual, pages 6B1-21 and 6B1-22. (After one minute, the adhesive begins to cure and loses its bonding ability.)

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
