DRIVE AXLE BOOT PROTECTOR J-TOOL MODIFICATION

An outer joint drive axle boot protector should be used for all service procedures which require the lower ball joint to be disconnected from the knuckle using special tool J34505 on 1986 Eldorados and Sevilles. This protector will prevent the boot clamp from being damaged. Damage to a clamp may not be visible, but can cause a leak and may eventually result in a drive axle joint failure.

Dealers currently have boot protector J-34754 in their essential tool inventory. This tool can be used for the above application if it is modified as shown in Figure 1. The indentations can be removed using diagonal cutters and can then be trimmed using a sharp knife.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
