1986 Eldorados and Sevilles use an electronic part (chip) called an EEPROM which plugs into the BCM and contains vital vehicle information, such as mileage and VIN. Should the EEPROM fail, the odometer display will be inoperative and/or a BCM code B556 will be set.
A replacement EEPROM chip can be obtained through the Service Center(s) listed below when diagnosis (code B556) indicates that the EEPROM chip should be replaced. Orders for a replacement EEPROM must be placed to these Service Centers.
Replacement EEPROMs may be requested with either zero miles or with recent available known mileage. An EEPROM with zero mileage should be requested only when vehicle mileage is not accurately known. The dealer must install an odometer replacement sticker on the driver's door with approximate mileage when installing an EEPROM with zero miles (except on a new car). In some cases, the mileage may be read from the failed EEPROM by the Repair Center or Delco Electronics if necessary.
When the mileage is known, an EEPROM should be requested with the latest available mileage. An odometer replacement sticker is not required if the replacement EEPROM has the vehicle mileage programmed into it.
In addition to mileage, the following information must be given to the Service Center when requesting a replacement EEPROM chip:
(1) V.I.N. (2) Is vehicle U.S.A. or French/Canadian? (3) Is vehicle two or four door?
The replacement EEPROM will be received by the dealer with a claim form originated by the Service Center. The appropriate portions of this form are to be completed by the dealer and returned to the Service Center with the replaced EEPROM. One copy of the claim form is to be retained by the dealer and attached to the R.O. The remaining forms are to be returned to the Service Center with the replaced EEPROM. Failure to return the replaced EEPROM with the claim form will result in the assessment of a $200 core charge. Zones will be notified of any EEPROMs not returned within 60 days. All replaced EEPROMs returned to the Service Center will be forwarded to Delco Electronics for evaluation.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
