All 1986 model THM440-T4 transaxles are built without an input shaft to 4th clutch shaft seal. When servicing a THM440-T4 built prior to 1986, it is not necessary to reinstall an input shaft to 4th clutch shaft seal.
At the start of 1986 production, all THM440-T4 transaxles are built with single-sided clutch plates. When servicing 3rd clutch plates on any year/model 440-T4, use the single-sided clutch plates (Service Package No. 8646938).
All 1986 production on transaxle model codes AAH, ACH, ADH, AFH, AMH, ARH (see Figure 1 for Transaxle Model Identification) are built with the converter clutch regulator valve spring eliminated. Due to calibration and fluid passage changes, the spring is no longer required (Figure 2, Item 394).
Do not install this spring on any 1986 models with model codes AAH, ACH, ADH, AFH, AMH, ARH as an increase of the apply feel of the converter clutch may result.
Refer to the appropriate Service Manual for removal and installation procedures.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
