Some 1986 and 1987 Eldorados and Sevilles may experience random flashing of instrument panel tailtales or IPC displays with the ignition in the "OFF" position. This may be caused by electrical feedback to the BCM from the trunk pulldown unit. To diagnose this condition, open the trunk while the EPC displays are flashing. If opening the trunk stops the displays from flashing, feedback from the trunk pulldown unit may be causing the condition.
The condition can be repaired by replacing the trunk pulldown switch with a new design switch, P/N 16603372, as follows:
1. Remove trunk rear trim panel.
2. Disconnect wire connector at trunk pulldown unit.
3. Remove screw holding trunk pulldown switch to trunk pulldown unit and remove trunk pulldown switch.
4. Install new trunk pulldown switch, being careful not to damage switch contacts on trunk pulldown latch.
5. Reconnect wire connector and reinstall trunk rear trim panel.
For warranty purposes, use labor operation R4045 at .2 hours.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
