Some 440-T4 transaxles may exhibit a delayed 2-3 shift or loss of 3rd gear caused by a cut or damaged 3rd clutch inner seal. To correct this condition, a new thicker 3rd clutch inner seal (Item #635A - Figure 1) has been released. This change entered production after September 1, 1986 (Julian Date 244) and is also incorporated in all Service Replacement Transaxle Assembly (SRTA) models, effective November 15, 1986 (Julian Date 319). To repair models built prior to these dates, a Service Package (P/N 8646991) has been released. This package contains:
o Housing and Shaft Assembly, input o Seal, 3rd Ctutch Inner o 3rd Roller Clutch Assembly
To service 1987 models built after September 1, 1986 (Julian Date 244) or SRTA models after November 15, 1986 (Julian Date 319), use: Seal Kit, (P/N 8644919).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
