CAMPAIGN: ACCELERATOR PEDAL INTERFERENCE (REPLACE MATS)

MODELS: 1986 SEVILLE AND ELDORADO

The possibility exists for the original equipment floor mat to interfere with the accelerator pedal. Under certain circumstances, a mispositioned floor mat could interfere with the accelerator pedal preventing the throttle from returning to the closed (idle) position when the accelerator pedal is released. Dear General Motors Customer:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

General Motors of Canada has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1986 Seville and Eldorado vehicles having original equipinent floor mats. Under certain conditions, the possibility exists that the floor mat could become mispositioned and interfere with the accelerator pedal preventing the throttle from returning to the closed (idle) position when the acceterator pedal is released. Although the service brakes remain finctional, loss of acceterator control could result in a vehicle crash without prior warning.

To eliminate the possibility of mispositioning the floor mat, your Dealer will be required to replace both front floor mats in your vehicle with those of a new desigin which are longer and have improved retention.

Unfortunately, the new desigin floor mats will not be available until mid to late June 1987.

After that time the mats will be sent directly to your GM Dealer, who will then contact you to arrange a mutually agreeable date to have your new floor mats installed.

Until you have had an opportunity to have your floor mats replaced, we recommend you remove the floor mat from the driver's floor area. However, please retain both floor mats as they are required to be turned in to your Dealer to obtain the new replacements.

This letter identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this letter to your Dealer will assist their Service personnel in completing the necessary correction to your vehicle in the shortest possible time.

Further assistance, if required may be obtained from the General Motors Zone Office nearest you. Your vehicle Owner's Manual provides the location and phone number of each respective Zone Office.

We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
