The CS-144 120 AMP generator used on all 1986 Deville, Eldorado and Seville vehicles was originally serviced only as a complete assembly. DSIB 86-6-108, which should be destroyed, described the procedure for ordering remanufactured generators (P/N 10497111). Service parts for the CS-144 generator are now available through GM Parts and a listing of parts unique to this generator is provided below.
For diagnosis of the generator, refer to section 6D of the Service Information Manual.
The CS-144 internal parts are similar to earlier models but are electrically different. Therefore, only service parts listed for the CS-144 should be used. There are also two basic design and assembly differences in the slip ring end bearing and drive end frame as compared to past models. These differences are as follows:
A new slip ring end bearing (P/N 1989711) must be installed whenever the rotor is separated from the slip ring end frame.
1. Install the slip ring end bearing onto the rotor shaft by pressing on the inner race until the stop is reached. (Refer to Figure 1).
2. Guide the bearing into the slip ring end cavity being careful not to deform the tolerance rings (plastic rings) that are part of the outer race of the bearing.
3. Install the four thru-bolts from the slip ring end frame to the drive end frame.
The drive end frame components are held onto the rotor shaft with a split tapered collar, which is not removable. Therefore, to service any drive end frame components such as: The rotor, front bearing, pulley or fan, the drive end frame assembly (P/N 10456357) must be replaced.

For warranty purposes, use labour operation number J4080 at .8 hour and the appropriate add condition when repairing the generator. When replacing generator with a remanufactured unit (P/N 10497111), use labour operation number J4100 at .6 hour. Zone approval will now be required with this labour operation.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
