A new design transaxle shift cable entered production on 1986 Eldorados and Sevilles. This cable requires a new adjustment procedure. Vehicles equipped with the new design cable can be identified by the fixed attachment at the transaxle detent lever and the added spring included in the adjustment mechanism. To adjust the transaxle shift cable, use the following procedure:
1. Place console shift lever in 'N' (neutral).
2. Compress lock tabs and pull lock clip up (see figure).
3. Position transaxle detent lever in neutral. Obtain neutral position by rotating the transaxle detent lever clockwise from park position, through reverse into neutral. Verify console shift lever is in 'N' (neutral).
4. Push lock clip down into the locked position.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
