When wiring a 1986 'E' or 'K' series vehicle for trailer towing, two harnesses are required. The first harness (P/N 20622074) is installed in the trunk of the vehicle and interfaces with the vehicle's tail lamp harness. This harness provides protection of the turn/hazard module not offered by any other harness we are currently aware of.
The use of any other harness for this purpose may cause damage to the turn/hazard module.
The second harness (P/N 2987124) mates with the first harness and is routed to the outside of the trunk where it is spliced together with the trailer's tail lamp wiring.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
