INSUFFICIENT A/C COOLING AT IDLE (INSTALL FAN)

INSUFFICIENT A/C COOLING AT IDLE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1986 AND 1987 ELDORADO AND SEVILLE -----------------

Some 1986 and 1987 Eldorados and Sevilles may experience a condition of insufficient air conditioning cooling at idle or while driving at low speeds in high ambient temperatures and humidity. This condition may be caused by insufficient air flow across the condenser and a greater than Optimal charge level. To repair this condition, install a cooling fan shroud, P/N 22054223, and reduce the refrigerant charge level to 2-3/8 lbs. using the following procedure:

1. Remove A/C compressor hose bracket screw.

2. Remove the air cleaner air inlet duct.

3. Remove two fan bracket bolts.

4. Disconnect electrical connector to fan motor and remove the wire from the two retaining clips.

5. Remove fan and ring bracket.

6. Mark fan motor shaft and fan hub as shown in Figure 1 to ensure correct balance upon reassembly.

7. Transfer fan motor, two rubber isolators, and two wire retaining clips to fan shroud, P/N 22054223.

8. Install fan and shroud using original fan bracket bolts.

NOTICE: Ensure spark plug wire is positioned away from fan blade to avoid contact.

9. Connect fan motor wire connector and place wire into retainers.

10. Discharge, evacuate, and charge A/C system to 2-3/8 lbs.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
