SCREECHING NOISE DURING CRANKING - REPLACE FLYWHEEL

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1985-1988 C,E,K,V WITH 4.1L OR 4.5L ------------------ TRANSVERSE V8 ENGINES

Some 1985-1988 DeVilles and Fleetwoods, 1986-1988 Eldorados and Sevilles, and 1987-1988 Allantes may experience a screeching noise when the starter motor is engaged. Vehicles which experience this condition can be repaired by replacing the flywheel with P/N 1648458. This newly-released part has a wider starter ring gear as well as improved ring gear retention and closer tolerances. This flywheel will be used in 1989 production.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
