FRONT ASHTRAY FALLS OPEN ADD PADDING AS OUTLINED

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1986 TORONADO

A condition may exist where the ashtray falls open without being manually activated due to excessive clearances within the ashtray assembly. To repair this condition, it will be necessary to reduce tolerances by applying one square inch of foam padding, 1/2" in thickness, to each side of the light deflector behind the ashtray door. Refer to figure. Also check heat shield tension. Spring should hold shield in full up position with ashtray open. Tension may be increased by bending spring as illustrated.

NOTE: 1/2" thick foam is a general specification. It may be necessary to increase/decrease thickness accordingly.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
