All 1988 Eldorados and Sevilles are equipped with a refrigerant system filter within the compressor hose assembly muffler, Figure 1. The new hose assembly can be identified by the indentations in the muffler. This fllter eliminates the need to flush the A/C system after a compressor failure.
When replacing a compressor on a 1988 Eldorado or Seville:
1. Replace the compressor hose assembly, P/N 1640410.
2. Inspect the orifice wbe for debris and if necessary clean or replace it. If in the unlikely event a screen on the orifice tube is ripped, the evaporator core, condenser, and orifice tube must also be replaced.
For warranty purposes, use Labor Operation D4440 at 1 hour for compressor replacement with an add time of .6 hour for compressor hose assembly replacement.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
