When servicing the 2nd clutch assembly on a 1987 or 1988 THM 440-T4 transaxle use only a new 2nd clutch piston inner seal. When servicing die 2nd clutch assembly on a 1985 or 1986 THM 440-T4 transaxle, either the new seal or previous seal may be used.
This new seal uses a different material (Viton) than the previous seal and can be identified by its part number (8668074) molded into the lip of the seal (Item 614B, Figure 1). Beginning on October 30, 1987 (Julian Date 303), all 1988 THM 440-T4 transaxles were built using a new 2nd clutch piston inner seal.
A new seal may not be included in the Overhaul Seals and Gaskets Package, P/N 8646975, or Overhaul Repair Complete Package, P/N 8646976. When servicing 1987 and 1988 models, make sure these overhaul packages contain the new seal. If they do not, order service package, P/N 8662935.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
