Some late production 1988 4.5L engines were built with an intake manifold different than earlier engines which requires service technician awareness for future service. 1988 engines built between engine unit numbers TlOL324456 and TlOL324632 require a 40mm bolt in position #3 in Figure 1 rather than the 55mm bolt normally required. Bolt torque sequence and final torque values remain the same for all engines, refer to Figure 1. 1989 model year engines will be built with a 55mm bolt in this position.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
