A cross bar brace located between the shock towers in the engine compartment was added to all Toronados (no Trofeos) and Rivieras to enhance the ride and handling characteristics of the vehicle. Vehicles equipped with a standard brake system use brace, P/N #1631794, and vehicles with Anti-Lock Brake System use brace, P/N #20685368. This brace was incorporated after the start of 1990 Production at VIN breakpoint 301428 for the Toronado and 402617 for the Riviera.
To install this brace use the following procedure:
1. Remove front nut and washer from strut stud and install brace assembly between the engine compartment strut tower by aligning holes in brace assembly over studs. Refer to Figure 1, Item 1.
2. Install one washer, P/N #11500323, over rearward stud on right and left side. Refer to Figure 1, Item 2.
3. Install one nut, P/N #11500760, over rearward stud on right and left side then drive and torque nut to 27 Nm Refer to Figure 2, Item 3.
4. Reinstall front washer and stud and torque nut to 27 Nm
An engine compartment rear sight shield and bracket to engine compartment can also - be installed on Rivieras only using the following procedure:
5. Install left and right shield bracket to the strut spring assembly. Refer to Figure 2, Item 1.

6. Install one washer, P/N #11500323, and one nut, P/N #11500760 over stud on right and left side then drive and torque nut to 27 Nm. Use this step only when installing brackets for sight shield, P/N #1631794 for vehicles with standard brake systems. Refer to Figure 2, Items 2 and 3.
7. No washer is required when installing the bracket, P/N #1642328/#1642329 on ABS systems. Refer to Figure 3, Item 4.
8. Install rear sight shield assembly to engine compartment rear bracket. Refer to Figures 2 and 3, Item 4.

9. Install one retainer, P/N #1637234, on right and left side of sight shield and push on retainer to secure assembly. Refer to Figures 2 and 3, Item 5.
