CLICKING NOISE WHEN CYCLING DOOR GLASS

SUBJECT: CLICKING NOISE WHEN CYCLING DOOR GLASS TO FULL UP POSITION (ATTACH VELCRO(R) TO FRONT AND REAR GUIDE BLOCKS)

MODELS: 1996 CADILLAC ELDORADO WITH VIN BREAKPOINTS 602400 - 607000

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON AN OBJECTIONABLE CLICKING NOISE HEARD WHEN CYCLING THE DOOR GLASS TO ITS FULL UP POSITION.

CAUSE:

DUE TO PREMATURE WEAR OF THE PVC COATING ON THE UP-STOPS, THE GLASS WOULD TRAVEL UP AN ADDITIONAL 1 - 1.5MM (3/64 - 1/16 INCH), CAUSING THE GLASS TO CLOSE OUTSIDE THE BLOW-OUT CLIP. THE PVC COATING WAS DELETED FROM THE UP-STOP, ALLOWING METAL TO METAL CONTACT OF THE GLASS GUIDE BLOCKS HITTING THE UP-STOPS.

CORRECTION:

1. REMOVE DOOR TRIM PANEL, REFER TO SECTION 10-6 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

2. REMOVE FRONT SPEAKER, REFER TO SECTION 10-6 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

3. CUT A PIECE OF THE SOFT SIDE OF A STRIP OF VELCRO(R) TO FIT THE TOP OF THE FRONT AND REAR GUIDE BLOCK, APPROXIMATELY 30 X 14MM (1.0 - .5 INCH), SEE FIGURE 1.

4. CYCLE GLASS SO THE FRONT AND REAR GUIDE BLOCKS ARE EXPOSED.

5. CLEAN THE SURFACE OF THE GUIDE BLOCK AND APPLY A THIN COAT OF LOCTITE(R) 401 SURFACE ADHESIVE, OR EQUIVALENT.

6. ATTACH VELCRO(R) TO FRONT AND REAR GUIDE BLOCKS.

7. INSTALL FRONT SPEAKER, REFER TO SECTION 10-6 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

8. INSTALL DOOR TRIM PANEL, REFER TO SECTION 10-6 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

IMPORTANT: IF IT BECOMES NECESSARY TO REPLACE A NON-COATED UP-STOP, THE REPLACEMENT PART WILL BE COATED WHICH WILL REQUIRE A DOOR GLASS REALIGNMENT FOR PROPER GLASS HEIGHT AND SEALING.
