Removal Procedure
Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
• | Unnecessary SIR system repairs |
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
• | Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring. |
• | If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. |
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to
Disabling the SIR System
in SIR.
- Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer
to
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement
in SIR
- Remove the hazard knob mounting bolt (5) and hazard knob (2) from
the steering column.
- Remove the wave washer from the upper steering shaft.
- Install J 23653-SIR
to the upper steering shaft and
depress the shaft lock.
- Remove the bearing retainer (1) from the upper steering shaft.
- Remove J 23653-SIR
from the steering shaft.
- Remove the shaft lock
(1).
- Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).
- Remove the upper bearing spring (3).
- Unscrew and remove the tilt lever handle.
- Remove the turn signal switch lever. Refer to
Multifunction Turn Signal Lever Replacement - On Vehicle
.
- Remove the flat head tapping
screw (3).
- Remove the round washer head screw (2).
- Remove the signal switch arm assembly.
- Remove the pan head screws (1).
- Disconnect the turn signal switch assembly from the bulk head
connector.
- Attach a wire to the turn
signal switch assembly connector. This will help to make the installation
easier.
- Remove the turn signal switch assembly.
- Pull the turn signal switch assembly connector through the column.
Installation Procedure
- Attach a wire to the turn
signal switch wiring connector.
- Feed the turn signal switch assembly through the column.
- Connect the turn signal switch assembly connector to the bulk
head connector.
- Install the turn signal switch assembly on to the upper shaft
assembly.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the pan head screws (1).
Tighten
Tighten the pan head screws (1) to 9 N·m (80 lb in).
- Lubricate the signal switch arm assembly (4) with synthetic grease.
- Install the signal switch arm assembly (4).
- Install the flat head tapping screw (3).
Tighten
Tighten the flat head tapping screw (3) to 2 N·m (20 lb in).
- Install the round washer head screw (2).
Tighten
Tighten the round washer head screw (2) to 4 N·m (31 lb in).
- Install the turn signal switch lever. Refer to
Multifunction Turn Signal Lever Replacement - On Vehicle
.
- Install the tilt lever handle.
- Install the upper bearing
spring (3).
- Install the turn signal cam assembly (2).
- Install the shaft lock to the upper steering shaft (1).
- Install the bearing retainer on to the upper steering shaft.
- Install J 23653-SIR
to upper steering shaft and depress shaft lock.
- Install the bearing retainer to the upper steering shaft groove.
- Remove J 23653-SIR
from the upper steering shaft.
- Install the hazard knob
and hazard knob mounting screw (5) to the steering column.
Tighten
Tighten the hazard knob mounting screw to 2 N·m (20 lb in).
- Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer
to
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement
in SIR.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to
Enabling the SIR System
in SIR.
