J 1859-A Countergear and Steering Wheel Puller

Removal Procedure

Caution: When you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, you must disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR.
  3. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut.
  4. Install J 1859-A to the steering wheel.
  5. Using J 1859-A remove the steering wheel from the upper steering shaft.
  6. Remove J 1859-A from the steering wheel.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 591336  Size: SH
  1. Feed the coil assembly lead through the slot in the steering wheel.
  2. Install the steering wheel (1) to the upper steering column shaft.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the steering wheel retaining nut.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the steering wheel retaining nut to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

  6. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR.
  7. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
