Removal Procedure

Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

   • Air bag deployment
   • Personal injury
   • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
   • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
   • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the left closeout insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  3. Important: The multifunction turn signal and hazard switch does not have to be removed from the steering column when replacing the ignition lock cylinder. Let the multifunction turn signal switch hang free after the removal of the screws.

  4. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  5. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement in SIR.
  6. Remove the multifunction turn signal and hazard switch. Refer to Multifunction, Turn Signal, and Hazard Switch Replacement - On Vehicle .

Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the ignition lock cylinder retaining screw.
  9. Tighten
Tighten the ignition lock cylinder retaining screw to 25 N·m (22 lb in).

  10. Install the warning buzzer switch (3).
  11. Install the retaining clip (4) to the steering column theft deterrent lock cylinder terminal wires and the lock housing cover.
