Circuit Description

The outside rear view mirror switch supplies inputs to the memory mirror module (MMM) to drive the outside mirrors horizontal and vertical motors. The outside rear view mirror switch selector must be in either the L or R position in order to operate the power mirrors. When the outside rear view mirror switch is actuated, a battery positive voltage input signal and a ground input signal is sent to the MMM. When the MMM recognizes the input combination, it moves the appropriate mirror in the requested direction. If the MMM does not recognize the input combination as a valid input, it ignores the combination and does not move the mirror.

Conditions for Setting the DTCs

    • DTCs B1982 and B1983 are not set.
    • Mirror switch is active for greater than 30 seconds after the mirror has reached the limit of its travel.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The motor outputs being driven in response to the suspect switch are deactivated.
    • The MMM continues responding to valid inputs from the other positioning switches.
    • Memory recall commands are ignored.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The MMM does not detect the switch failure during the last monitoring cycle.
    • DTC will clear after 50 consecutive ignition cycles.

Diagnostic Aids

    • The following conditions may cause an intermittent malfunction:
       - An intermittent short to battery positive voltage on an outside rear view mirror switch signal circuit.
       - An outside rear view mirror switch that is shorted to battery positive voltage internally.
       - An outside rear view mirror switch that is sticking.
       - An outside rear view mirror switch that was pressed for longer than 30 seconds.
    • If the DTC does not reset after it has been cleared, then the malfunction may be intermittent. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections Testing for Intermittent and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. Tests for the normal state of the outside rear view mirror switch using a scan tool. The scan tool will display the normal state as Idle, and Left/Right/Up/Down when the switch is activated to the corresponding position.

  2. Tests if the MMM is able to detect a change in outside rear view mirror switch state. The scan tool will display the normal state as Idle, and Left/Right/Up/Down when the switch is activated to the corresponding position.

  3. Tests for a stuck or shorted outside rear view mirror switch. If the switch is stuck or shorted, the state will change from Idle to Left/Right/Up/Down when the switch is activated to the corresponding position.

  4. Tests for a short to battery positive voltage in the appropriate outside rear view mirror switch signal circuit.

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Set the outside rear view mirror switch selector in the L position.
  4. With a scan tool, observe the Left Mirror Switches parameter in the Memory Mirror Module data list.

Does the scan tool display Idle?

  1. Activate the outside rear view mirror switch.
  2. With the scan tool, observe the Left Mirror Switches parameter.

Does the Left Mirror Switches parameter change state?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the outside rear view mirror switch.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. With a scan tool, observe the Left Mirror Switches parameter.

Does the scan tool display Idle?

Go to Step 7

Test the appropriate signal circuit of the outside rear view mirror switch for a short to battery positive voltage. Refer to Testing for a Short to Voltage in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the memory mirror module (MMM). Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
  2. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC as specified in the supporting text.
