For 1990-2009 cars only
  1. Position the absorber lengthwise in an arbor press.
  2. Note the original position of the unit.

  3. Use the press in order to compress the unit at least 10 mm (3/8 in).
  4. Release the pressure.
  5. Determine whether the unit has returned to the original position. If the unit did not return to the original position, discard the unit.
  6. Shake the energy absorber.
  7. Listen for a loose internal component. If rattling is heard, then the orifice is sheared. Replace the unit.
