Was the Lighting System Diagnostic System Check performed?

Go to Step 2

Important:: Gear selector must be out of the PARK position in order to operate the daytime running lamps (DRL).

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Depress and hold the brake pedal.
  3. Move the gear selector out of the PARK position.
  4. Verify the parking brake is disengaged.
  5. Expose the ambient light sensor to a bright incandescent lamp.
  6. Wait at least 20 seconds.
  7. Place the gear selector in the PARK position.
  8. Release the brake pedal.

Did the DRL operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

Do the high beam headlamps operate properly?

Go to Step 4

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the DRL relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the DRL relay switch and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 6

Test for an open or short to ground in the battery positive voltage circuit of the DRL relay switch. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 9

Inspect for poor connections at the DRL relay. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair a short to ground in the DRL headlamp supply voltage circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the DRL relay. Refer to Relay Replacement in Wiring Systems.

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
