Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. Tests for the proper operation of the circuit in the high voltage range.

  2. Tests for the proper operation of the circuit in the low voltage range. If the fuse in the jumper opens when you perform this test, the signal circuit is shorted to voltage.

Operate the incandescent lamps.

Are the incandescent lamps always on?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. With a scan tool, observe the Interior Lamp Switch parameter in the Instrument Cluster (IPC) inputs data list.

Does the scan tool indicate that the Interior Lamp Switch parameter is on?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the headlamp switch.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. With a scan tool, observe the Interior Lamp Switch parameter.

Does the scan tool indicate that the Interior Lamp Switch parameter is on?

Are the INC DIM-1 incandescent lamps always on?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the Instrument Cluster (IPC) connector C3.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Did the INC DIM-2 incandescent lamps turn off?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the Instrument Cluster (IPC) connector C2.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Did the INC DIM-1 incandescent lamps turn off?

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the Incandescent Dim Pot parameter in the Instrument Cluster (IPC) data list.

Does the scan tool indicate that the Incandescent Dim Pot parameter is within the specified range?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the headlamp switch.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. With a scan tool, observe the Incandescent Dim Pot parameter.

Does the scan tool indicate that the Incandescent Dim Pot parameter is greater than the specified value?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect a 3 amp fused jumper wire between the instrument panel lamps dimmer switch signal circuit and the low reference circuit of the IP dimmer switch.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. With a scan tool, observe the Incandescent Dim Pot parameter.

Does the scan tool indicate that the Incandescent Dim Pot parameter is less than the specified value?

Test the low reference circuit of the IP dimmer switch for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
