  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Disconnect the air line from the top of the shock.
  4. Support the lower control arm with a screw jack in order to relieve the spring load.

  5. Object Number: 161652 Size: SH
  6. Remove the shock absorber lower nut and bolt.
  7. Remove the upper mounting nut, retainer and insulator using the J 35669 .
  8. Compress the shock absorber by hand and remove through the upper control arm.
  9. Inspect the upper and lower shock absorber insulators for cracks, tears, or other damage. Replace worn or damaged insulators.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 161652 Size: SH
  1. Position the top of the shock absorber with the insulator attached in the suspension support.
  2. Install the upper shock insulator, retainer and nut.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the shock absorber lower nut and bolt
  5. Tighten

        • Tighten the upper shock absorber nut to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).
        • Tighten the lower shock absorber nut to 102 N·m (75 lb ft).
        • Connect the air line to the top of the strut.
        • Connect the shock absorber air line to the rear suspension support.
        • Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

Important: Before lowering the vehicle onto its wheels (or before driving the vehicle, if it was not on a lift) turn the ignition on and wait approximately 45 seconds. This will permit the ALC system to execute the ARC, ensuring that the air adjustable shock absorbers are filled with residual pressure.

        • Lower the vehicle.
