Steering Column Seal Replacement - On Vehicle All Except C3500HD
Removal Procedure
- Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
- Set the steering wheel in the LOCK position.
- Mark the upper to the lower intermediate shaft in order to be
sure of proper installation.
- Remove the shield from the steering gear
- Remove the nut and the bolt from the upper to the lower shaft
connection.
- Pull the lower shaft out of the upper shaft.
- Grasp and compress the
seal (1).
Remove the seal by pulling the seal away from the dash (2).
Installation Procedure
Caution: If steering column to cowl panel seal is torn or otherwise damaged,
it must be replaced. Confirm that the seal and inner race are properly located.
Failure to do so may allow carbon monoxide into the vehicle, which may result
in serious personal injury or death.
- Slide the steering column seal (1) up the steering column.
- Align the locating tab on the seal (1) with the notch at the bottom
of the dash panel (2) opening.
- Slightly compress the seal (1) while forcing the seal inward until
the retaining collar snaps open on the inside of the cab.
- Pull the lower shaft up into the upper shaft.
- Verify that the retaining collar has opened on the inside of the
cab 360 degrees.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the nut
and the bolt to the upper end of the shaft.
Tighten
Tighten the nut and the bolt to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).
- Install the shield to the intermediate shaft.
Steering Column Seal Replacement - On Vehicle C3500HD
Removal Procedure
- Remove the intermediate steering shaft. Refer to
Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement
.
- Push the locking ring
tabs inward one at a time until the seal (1) separates from the dash panel
(2).
- Note the position of the locating tab directly at the bottom of
the locking ring and the dash panel (2) opening.
Installation Procedure

- Align the locating tab groove on the seal (1) directly at the bottom
of the dash panel (2) opening.
The sheet metals fits into the groove.
- Force the seal (1) upward and inward until the seal snaps into
place.
- Install the intermediate steering shaft. Refer to
