Condition
Important: If the customer did not comment on a driveability concern, disregard this bulletin.
Some customers may comment about a driveability concern. This condition may set a check engine light or MIL.
Cause
GM Engineering is attempting to determine the need for performing the fuel injector cleaning procedure on the 5.3L LMG and LC9 engines. GM has a need to obtain information first hand from the technician during diagnosis and BEFORE repair. As a result,
this information will be used by engineering to "root cause" the customer's concern and validate a field fix.
If diagnosis leads to a repair other than fuel injectors, disregard this bulletin. If diagnosis leads the technician to clean the fuel injector(s), complete the following steps noting all information on the repair order.
DO NOT MAKE ANY REPAIRS PRIOR TO CONTACTING THE ENGINEER.
- Describe the customer's concern - be specific.
- Verify the vehicle mileage.
- Check for DTCs - note whether the DTC is current or stored in history.
- Can the customer's concern be duplicated?
- Using the Tech 2®, record the following information:
Refer to Fuel Trim Data thru the Tech 2®:
• | Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) reading: |
Misfire Data thru the Tech 2®:
• | Injector disable due to misfire? |
- Using the CH-47976 - Active Fuel Injector Tester, perform the injector test. Document the following results on the repair order:
• | What is the percent average flow of each injector? |
• | What is the injector flow rate for each injector? |
- Contact the following engineer and provide all information noted on the repair order. The engineer will provide the technician with repair information.
If the engineer does not answer, leave a message containing the following information.
If the engineer does not return the call within one hour, proceed with repairs based on diagnosis.
