SPEEDOMETER FLUTTER OR NOISE PROCEDURE TO CORRECT

SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE FLUTTER OR NOISE - 1982 AND 1983 "C", "D", "Z" VEHICLES

The purpose of this bulletin is to address a condition of noisy speedometer and speedometer needle flutter on 1982 and 1983 Devilles, Broughams, Limousines and Commercial Chassis vehicles.

The speedometer cable, a continuous flex shaft, can be kinked during installation to the transmission. As a consequence, there is a vibration in the cable which induces noise and speedometer needle flutter. Also, because of the cable winding, lubrication is forced away from the speedometer head, eliminating any vibration damping which it would otherwise provide.

To correct speedometer cable conditions on 1982 and 1983 "C", "D" and "Z" vehicles only, service replacement part #25033403 can be ordered. This is a two-piece flex shaft design which provides additional lubrication and noise isolation.

For warranty purposes, use Operation No. N4429 at .7 hour.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
