Beginning in early January, 1984, all 1984 Deville and Brougham models equipped with THM 200-4R transmissions have a new transmission oil pan (Figure 1), composition cork gasket and special hex head bolts with conical washers (Figure 2). These new parts are used to reduce the possibility of transmission fluid leaks in the oil pan area and are similar to the part changes previously made to THM 325-4L,125C and 200C transmissions.
When servicing any 1981 through 1984 Deville or Brougham model equipped with a THM 200-4R transmission for fluid leaks in the oil pan area, follow the listed service procedures and parts information furnished in this bulletin.
Service Procedures
1. Diagnose source of the transmission fluid leak to be certain it is from the oil pan area.
2. Visually inspect the oil pan and bolts to determine if the new parts have been used (transmissions built after I.D. numbers 003 IT 84 AA 0001 or 003 IT 840M 0001 should have the new parts).
3. Refer to Section 7A of the Service Information Manual for proper removal and installation procedures of the affected parts.
4. Assure that all new service parts are used. If the transmission is equipped with the new oil pan and bolts, you should need only a new gasket. If the transmission is equipped with former parts, use the following procedure:
A. Remove the oil pan.
B. Clean the transmission case to pan mounting surface with solvent and visually inspect the surface for damage and/or the presence of RTV sealant. Be certain to remove all RTV sealant from the case to pan mounting surface.
C. Replace the former oil pan (Figure 1) with service package number 8639907.
(B) When replacing the oil pan, use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 11 N.m (9 ft. lbs.) then retorque all the bolts a second time to the same specification. (This retorque is important because the gasket material relaxes after the initial tightening.)

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
