Some vehicles equipped with tilt or tilt and telescope steering columns may experience a squeaking noise when turning the steering wheel while in a tilted position. This can be caused by insufficient grease in the tilting mechanism.
1. Start engine.
2. Position steering wheel in the full up position. See Figure 1.
3. Touching only the rim, turn the steering wheel back and forth to the extreme left and right positions.
4. Repeat this procedure with the column tilt mechanism positioned at the straight on and full down positions.
1. Position the tilt mechanism in the full up position.
2. Spray lubriplate lubricant grease, P/N 1052349, or equivalent into the opening alongside the tilt lever, aiming at the universal joint. See Figure 2. Turn steering wheet one full turn while applying grease.
3. Hold tift release lever in the released position and move steering wheel from full up to full down position 4 to 8 times.
4. If squeak persists, repeat step 2.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
