POP OR CLICK NOISE WHEN WINDOW IS RAISED OR LOWERED-MANUAL

MODELS AFFECTED: 1987-1988 DE VILLES AND FLEETWOODS

This Bulletin supersedes T-88-20 in Group 10 which should be destroyed.

Some 1987 DeVilles and Fleetwoods after breakpoint 293404, and 1988 DeVilles and Fleetwoods may exhibit a popping or clicking noise when window is lowered and raised. The pop or click usually occurs one time per window cycle and usually at the same point in window travel each time. The condition may be duplicated by lowering the affected door glass and then grasping the glass and moving it forward and rearward. This condition may be caused by loose rivets in the window sash channel.

All 1987 DeVilles and Fleetwoods built prior to VIN breakpoint 293404 have an adhesive retained door glass sash channel. To replace the adhesive retained sash channel or door glass on vehicles built prior to the above VIN breakpoint, refer to Section 5C of the 1987 Body Service Manual. 1987 DeVilles and Fleetwoods built after the above VIN breakpoint have rivet retained door glass channels. The procedure for replacing these channels is not in the 1987 Body Service Manual.

To replace a rivet retained door glass sash channel or to repair the popping or clicking condition, use the following procedure:

Removal (refer to Figure 1)

1. Remove the door glass as specified in Section 5 of the Body Service Manual.

CAUTION:

Safety glasses and work gloves should be wom to reduce the chance of personal injury should the glass break.

2. Place the door glass on a protective surface.

3. Drill out rivets using a 4.8mm (3/16") drill bit, taking care not to enlarge hole in sash channel. If sash channel is enlarged during drilling operation, a new sash must be used.

4. Remove sash (3) and spacer (2).

Installation

1. Locate spacer (2) to door glass and sash channel (3) to spacer and glass.

NOTE: As a precaution to prevent the popping condition from recurring, use 3M Channel Bonding Epoxy, 3M P/N 08641 or equivalent, to bond the sash channel to the spacer and the spacer to the door glass.

2. Align holes in door glass, spacer, and sash channel.

3. Connect sash and spacer to glass using 3/16" x .527" aluminum domehead blind rivets, P/N 20743322, (two required).

4. Install door glass as specified in Section 5 of the Body Service Manual.

For warranty purposes, use Labor Operation C0116 for the right side and C0117 for the left side at 1.1 hours each for sash channel and glass R&R.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
