POOR FIT OR LOOSE LACE ON VINYL TOP REPAIR PROCEDURE

VINYL TOPS (OPTION CODE CB4) : LOOSE LACE, POOR FIT TO ROOF, RETAINER SHOWING THROUGH VINYL

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1987-1988 DE VILLE AND FLEETWOOD ----------------- Loose Lace ---------- Some 1987-1988 DeVilles and Fleetwoods with vinyl tops may exhibit a condition of loose lace around the upper quarter sail panel area (refer to Figure 1). This condition may be caused by poor mechanical retention of the lace. This condition may be repaired by using Loctite (R) Superbonder adhesive, GM P/N 993365 (or kit P/N 992664) or equivalent. Apply adhesive to the lace and hold in place for about 30 seconds. Use the most applicable labour operation from the Canadian Labour Time Guide and claim 0.2 hours. Poor Fit to Roof ---------------- Some 1987-1988 DeVilles and Fleetwoods with vinyl tops may exhibit a condition of a poor fit to the roof. This condition may be caused by two missing rivets in the top retainer (refer to Figure 2). This condition may be repaired using the following procedure:

1. Tape off roof close to vinyl top to protect paint.

2. Pull back vinyl in area of rivet holes, approximately 170mm from the sides of the car (refer to Figure 2).

3. Drill two holes using a 1/8" drill, taking care to drill through the sheet metal only.

4. Brush over holes with zinc chromate primer.

5. Install two 1/8" x 3/16" rivets.

6. Reinstall vinyl.

Showing Through Vinyl

Some 1987-1988 DeVilles and Fleetwoods with vinyl tops may experience a condition of retainer showing through vinyl. This condition may be caused by the vinyl top pad being too thin next to the retainer (refer to Figure 3).

This condition may be corrected by gently caulking the retainer under the vinyl. This should be done with care, so as not to damage the vinyl. A caulking spoon and hammer should be used with a towel or cloth between the caulking spoon and the top.
