ERRATIC FUEL GAUGE DISPLAY (REPLACE FUEL TANK)

MODELS AFFECTED: 1985-1990 DE VILLES AND FLEETWOODS

Some 1985-1990 DeVilles and Fleetwoods may experience a fuel gauge level display that counts down too fast or exhibits fuel starvation type driveability conditions. This condition may be due to the filler hole in the fuel tank reservoir being incompletely punched or partially blocked by plastic flashing. If the filler hole is obstructed, it is possible for the fuel pump to deplete the supply of fuel in the reservoir faster than it can be replenished.

To determine if a vehicle has the above condition, it is necessary to perform a visual inspection of the tank reservoir. To do this, first empty and then lower the fuel tank per the appropriate Service Information Manual. Remove the fuel tank sending unit and check the tank reservoir for an opening in the right rear corner of the reservoir to allow fuel replenishment. Refer to Figure 1.

If the filler hole is incompletely punched, or is restricted by plastic flashing, replace the tank. Do not attempt to clear an obstructed filler hole. The reservoir of the replacement tank should be inspected prior to installation. Refer to the chart below for the appropriate fuel tank part number for a given model year.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
