Some 1985-1989 DeVilles and Fleetwoods, 1982-1989 Eldorados and Sevilles, and 1982-1985 RWD DeVilles and Broughams with 4.1L or 4.5L V-8 engines may experience an oil pan drain plug gasket leak. A metal burr may have been left around the drain plug hole on the oil pan during manufacture. This will result in a torn or damaged gasket causing a leak. When an oil pan plug leak is suspected, or during an oil change, check the gasket for a tear. If the gasket is torn, use the following repair procedure:
1. Remove drain plug and the gasket. (If gasket stays on plug, remove and inspect).
2. Install the plug only, without the gasket, back into the pan.Tighten to 25 N-m (18 ft. lbs.). This will flatten the burrs on the pan.
3. Remove plug.
4. After inspecting gasket, replace if torn or damaged (P/N 14090908).
5. Install plug and gasket and torque to 30 N-m (22 ft. lbs.) and inspect for leaks.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
